03 / ABOUT — RAF

Before thefirst image.

For almost thirty years, I’ve refused to choose between thinking and making. I’ve never understood why I should.

02 / THE PERSON

The short version.

BASE

Besançon, France

PRACTICE

Independent.
International.
Nearly thirty years.

I’m Raf, an independent creative director, designer and director based in Besançon, France — not Paris, which somehow still feels worth specifying.

I work with clients and creative teams internationally, from Besançon.

Music came first. Then graphic design, motion, television, branding, projection mapping, film and, more recently, generative tools. What may look like a crooked career path from the outside has always felt fairly consistent from where I’m standing: I follow ideas until they find the right form.

I work independently, but rarely in isolation. Sometimes I take a project from the first thought to the final delivery myself. Sometimes I bring together the right people for it. Either way, I like staying close enough to the work to remain responsible for what it becomes.

Nearly thirty years later, I’m still learning new tools, changing methods and asking too many questions. So far, that seems to be working.

03 / THE APPROACH

Different forms.Same idea.

Art direction, design, motion, film, music, writing, code, AI… I don’t see them as separate professions. They’re simply different ways of developing the same idea.

The part I enjoy most happens long before the first image exists.

Projects usually begin with uncertainty and a brief that’s still open to change. That’s where I feel most useful: understanding the context, questioning assumptions, making unexpected connections and slowly building a direction that feels stronger than the one we started with.

Once that direction exists, I see no reason to step away.

Ideas have to survive reality. That’s where production begins to matter.

Thinking doesn’t stop once making begins. The two constantly feed each other. Constraints force better decisions. Prototypes reveal better ideas. The project keeps evolving until the very last delivery.

Curiosity has always been more reliable than inspiration.

Cinema, music, history, design, technology, science, architecture… I don’t collect references. I look for connections.

That’s usually where the best ideas are hiding.

A WORKING PRINCIPLE

Good ideas deservebetter than obviousanswers.
