THE PROJECT

One circle.Many ways through Paris.

Circles is a film created for the Paris 2024 competition venues, developed with CTV’s production team for the Sport Presentation programme. A recurring circle connects Parisian history, architecture, art and sport, giving a varied collection of images a common visual centre.

I developed the treatment and storyboard, assembled and created visual elements, then shaped the editing, compositing and 2D/3D animation. The circle changes function throughout the film: frame, mask, tunnel, object, transition and point of focus.

The package was approved and sent to the venues in July 2024, then adapted with Paralympic branding. The film shown here is the portfolio edit with the Paralympic ending.

01 / VISUAL APPROACH

Build movementfrom existing images.

The film brings together imagery from the public domain and sources supplied by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), alongside licensed material and created graphic elements. Photographs, artworks, maps and sporting images become layers to cut out, combine and animate.

The composition keeps returning to the circle. Repetition, symmetry and changes of scale carry the eye through the different sources. These reference boards from the June 2024 concept document explore the colour, collage and framing behind that approach.

02 / RHYTHM & PRODUCTION

Let the musicshape the movement.

The production worked with a limited budget for source material and music. A royalty-free catalogue track became the basis for the edit. Rumble & Roll was selected from Shutterstock’s music catalogue during development.

Its changes of pace and rhythmic breaks informed the animation: a gradual opening, denser sequences, moments of suspension and transitions that react to the sound. Much of the visual work comes from giving still material depth, rhythm and new relationships.

03 / CONCEPT & STORYBOARD

Map the journey.

The June 2024 concept document maps the planned progression of the film. Four historical compositions build a journey through Paris, from antiquity to the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Layered maps, artworks and architectural details converge around a circular centre.

These are early storyboard studies. The film evolved through animation tests and client feedback.
